Famous Quotes

Nobody in anime delivers a line like the Second Child. From her first words aboard an aircraft carrier to her last words on the beach after Third Impact, Asuka Langley Soryu speaks in italics and exclamation marks. This page collects her most famous lines from the TV series and End of Evangelion — with Japanese and German originals where they matter. Feel free to quote them; that's what a shrine is for.

The Classics

あんたバカぁ?

"Anta baka?!" — "What are you, stupid?!"

The signature line. Half insult, half nervous tic, Anta baka?! is aimed most often at Shinji — sharp enough to wound, familiar enough that it eventually sounds almost affectionate. It escaped the screen, too: among Japanese schoolkids in 1995–96 it became a genuine playground catchphrase. If you know one Asuka quote, it's this one.

"This is the designated pilot of Eva Unit 02, the 2nd Child, Asuka Langley Soryu."

She arrives mid-battle, over the Pacific, fighting an Angel on the deck of a battleship before she's even said hello. The introduction tells you everything: title first, name last, modesty never.

"That's not all that's different about Unit-02… MY Unit-02 is the world's first real Evangelion… the final production model!"

Possessive isn't the half of it. Unit-02 isn't a machine Asuka operates — it's the whole of her identity, and sharing it is unthinkable.

Mama

"Mama, they chose me! I'm an elite pilot now… Look at me, look at me mama. LOOK MAMA!"

On the day she was chosen as the Second Child, Asuka ran home to tell her mother — and found her dead by her own hand, the doll beside her. The line is a child's joy collapsing into a plea that was never answered.

"Asuka darling, mama cooked your favorite for you… or that girl over there will laugh at you."

After the test-activation accident, Kyoko recognized only a doll as her daughter. "That girl over there" is the real Asuka — standing in the room, invisible. Her mother never cooked for her again.

"I have to look after myself now."

At the funeral, her grandmother told her it was all right to cry. Asuka refused — deciding on the spot that she would never cry, never need anyone, and take care of herself alone. She was nine. The vow held for years, and the cracks are where her story happens.

The Breaking Point

"When I didn't win with my Eva, I lost whatever value I might have had… I hate myself the most."

Asuka built her entire self-worth on being the best pilot. When her sync ratio collapsed and the victories stopped, there was nothing underneath. The cruelest part of her downfall is that she narrates it herself, perfectly lucid about what she's losing.

"Why for her? Am I so worthless you couldn't do this for me?"

The rawest line in her breakdown — jealousy, abandonment, and self-loathing compressed into a single accusation.

Three-quarters German and raised partly in Germany, Asuka peppers her speech with German — usually when she's angry, which is often.

"Idiot!" — her default German insult, deployed at Shinji on a near-daily basis.

The German outbursts are more than flavor. They're armor — a louder, older language she retreats into, the same way she retreats into pride. When the pride finally cracks in Episode #22, the cracking happens in Japanese, and in the words of a little girl.

The Last Word

気持ち悪い

"Kimochi warui" — "How disgusting."

After Third Impact, on a red beach at the end of the world, the first two people to return are Shinji and Asuka. Her last line — and the film's — has been debated for decades: disgust at Shinji, at humanity, at being alive, or something closer to a strange, exhausted tenderness. The ambiguity is the point. Nearly thirty years later, fans still can't agree, and that argument is itself part of Evangelion's legacy.

The Wall in Her Heart

No one understood Asuka's defenses better than the woman who gave her a voice.

"Asuka was never the most straightforward character I've played. Every time I tried to sync with her, she wouldn't let me. Even at the end, she never crossed the line to reach me. One day I understood: there is a wall inside her heart."

Miyamura, Asuka's Japanese voice actress, spent years describing the role as trying to reach a girl who would never let her in — the wall, she realized, was the character itself. The actress couldn't get through it either; maybe none of us were meant to.
